Local Education Initiative Takes Next Step in Roxby Downs

A new cohort of five Roxby Downs residents has commenced their Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care studies through Uni Hub Spencer Gulf, marking another milestone in the community's ongoing commitment to developing homegrown early childhood professionals.

This Diploma program represents the natural progression from the highly successful Roxby Downs Early Childhood Project, which launched in the previous year and enabled 10 community members to achieve their Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

The original project delivered impressive results beyond simply building local capacity. It garnered significant recognition on the national stage, securing two 2024 Australian Rural Education Awards (AREAs) along with the 2024 Indaily Solstice Media Lifelong Learning Award.

As demand continues to rise for qualified early childhood professionals throughout Roxby Downs and neighbouring areas, this latest Diploma cohort addresses a critical community need. The program operates on a "Grow Our Own" philosophy, empowering local residents to obtain essential qualifications and hands-on experience for establishing sustainable careers in early childhood education.

Through collaboration with CQUniversity, BHP, and the Roxby Downs Children's Centre, the program provides flexible and accessible learning pathways. Students can complete their studies within their local community while undertaking practical placements at nearby childcare and early learning facilities.

Uni Hub Spencer Gulf Roxby Downs Centre Manager Sue Barry said the strong local response shows the community’s commitment to supporting young children and their families.

“Roxby Downs faces some unique challenges, including a transient workforce and a shortage of qualified early childhood educators, which directly affects childcare availability and makes it harder for parents to participate in the workforce,” she said.“This project is about investing in local people and building a workforce from within.

“The success of last year’s Certificate III students showed what’s possible when we support locals to pursue their goals. We’re proud to now be offering the Diploma program to help even more residents build rewarding careers in early childhood education.”
