Taree Universities Campus (TUC) Welcomes New Board Member Bruce Henry

Taree Universities Campus (TUC) welcomes Bruce Henry to the TUC Board. Bruce is a proud Chatham High alumnus and committed community advocate. He brings valuable insight and passion to TUC's work and his local roots and professional expertise will be a huge asset as TUC continues to support students across the MidCoast.

Bruce's research is in the broad area of nonlinear and statistical science with particular interests in pattern formation, random walks, anomalous diffusion, fractional calculus, applications of chaos and fractals, mathematical modelling, stochastic modelling, neuronal degeneration, spread of infectious diseases, growth of stromatolites, nonlinear lattice dynamics and statistical mechanics. His current work is focussed on mathematical models for subdiffusive transport and his teaching is in applied mathematics areas of calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems.

Some of his contributions to UNSW Sydney prior to his retirement from the university in 2020 included:

  • Studied and earned his PhD at UNSW, later holding roles in Canada and at ANU before returning to UNSW in 1991.

  • Rose through academic ranks, becoming Professor in 2012 and Head of School the same year.

  • Widely respected and adored by colleagues and students.

  • Led UNSW Mathematics and Statistics to national top rankings and strong ERA results.

  • Known for visionary, compassionate, and strategic leadership.

  • Expanded teaching programs, including Advanced Mathematics Honours and postgraduate data science and oceanography.

  • Instrumental in launching the Bachelor of Data Science and the UNSW Data Science Hub.

  • Championed equity, diversity, and inclusion within the School.

  • Advocated for women in mathematics through various initiatives and promotions.

  • Fostered a connected and inclusive student and staff community.

  • Supported hosting major academic events and the establishment of MERLIN Studio for digital education.

  • Navigated crises, including workplace change and the COVID-19 pivot to online learning, with empathy and effectiveness.

  • Maintained a strong research profile, earning fellowships and ARC grants.

  • Contributed to community outreach and education, including teacher development and student mentoring programs.

  • Left a legacy of academic excellence, strong community, and generous leadership.
